Cement - Cement makers
Hanson is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of heavy building materials to the construction industry and part of the HeidelbergCement Group, a global business with leading market positions in aggregates, cement and ready-mixed concrete.
The UK cement division operates kilns at Ketton in Rutland, Ribblesdale in Lancashire and Padeswood in North Wales, and also produces ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS), a cement replacement in ready-mixed and precast concrete, at Purfleet in Essex and Port Talbot in South Wales. The division includes a packed products business which sells a range of bagged cements and aggregates.
Major developments at the three cement works in recent years include investments to increase the use of alternative fuels in the kilns, These include profuel – a solid kiln fuel manufactured from paper, plastic and fibrous wastes that are either uneconomic or impossible to recycle – and solid recovered fuel (SRF), which is made from domestic waste and biomass.
