Carbon reduction strategy

The UK cement industry has assessed how it can help the government achieve its carbon targets and has developed a carbon reduction strategy to 2050.

This strategy is based on two key areas of action over the short term (2015), medium term (2030) and long term (2050) and is fully aligned with the recommendations of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) Cement Sustainability Initiative’s Cement technology roadmap 2009 -  Carbon emissions reductions up to 2050.

The two specific areas of action for the cement industry are:

  • Reduce direct emissions from cement kilns in addition to related activities such as transport and indirect emissions from electricity use
  • Work with the design and construction industry to promote low-carbon long-life dwellings, offices and other buildings that can adapt to a changing climate through the effective use of cement and concrete.
